Mining Meets Agriculture at Dawson Creek

Across the rural countryside thick with aspen trees and up into the mountains of British Columbia, the HO scale Kootenay and Northern Transportation, Limited works the Canadian Rockies. The company is comprised of the standard gauge Peace River Southern, made up of the British Columbia Railway and the Northern Alberta Railway, and the narrow gauge Kaslo and Sandon. The narrow gauge railroad connects Dawson Creek to McGuigan, Sandon, and Cody in southern British Columbia. The standard gauge Peace River Southern serves Dawson Creek and East Pine and connects to Chetwynd, Prince George, MacKenzie, Grande Prairie, and Peace River through staging. Phil Miller models the railroads somewhat after three prototypical railroads of Canada: the Kaslo & Slocan Railway, the Northern Alberta Railways, and the British Columbia Railway. The Canadian National also has a small presence on the pike.

Read more about Phil Miller’s Kootenay and Northern Transportation, Limited in the June 2019 Premium issue of Trackside Model Railroading digital magazine or see the full tour in the movie.

Explore the Washington Northern in HO Scale

Western Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula is home to the Olympic Mountain range, a very wild (and very wet) beautiful area that hosts the Olympic National Park. Towns skirt the edges of the park along the west end on the Pacific Coast and along the north end where the peninsula borders the waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca as it flows into the Puget Sound. Kevin Klettke models a freelanced version of the area on his Washington Northern Railroad. The HO scale layout is home to the fictional town of Port Andrews, which is similar to the real-life Port Townsend or Port Angeles on the north side of the peninsula. The WNRR main line connects to Hoqiuam and Aberdeen in Grays Harbor to the southwest. The shortline continues south off-layout to Portland, Oregon and east to Tacoma, Washington. In the real-life Olympic Peninsula, there were a number of railroads constructed, primarily to serve lumber industry. Kevin’s model railroad also serves the logging industry (with a big paper mill) and operates in the 1990s.

Come see the full story of this gorgeous model train layout on Trackside’s movie. On the movie, the WNRR is paired with a beautiful Southern Pacific layout and a freelanced version of the Kettle Valley Railway.
